Dr. Stephanie Kinsey of Palencia Dental in St. Augustine, Florida recently had the incredible opportunity to present at Grand Rounds for The International College of Craniomandibular Orthopedics (ICCMO) in Nashville, Tennessee. She acted as a keynote speaker for the 29th Annual Bernard Jankelson Memorial Lecture, “Raise Your TMD Practice to New Heights.” Dr. Kinsey’s presentation was titled “When TENS is Not Enough.”

There are a number of physical ailments that seem to have no sure origin, but can actually be traced to oral health problems. This unexpected link was the key focus of Dr. Kinsey’s presentation, which utilized various case studies to provide evidential backing to the discussion. She spoke of patients who suffered from chronic headaches, tinnitus, neck pain, and jaw stiffness, all of which can be understood and addressed with craniomandibular orthopedics and Temporo-Mandibular Joint (TMJ) care.

Transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation (TENS) and electromyogram (EMG) in particular has been shown to noticeably alleviate the aforementioned symptoms. For thoroughness, Dr. Kinsey broadened the presentation to other popular forms of treatments, such as using Invisalign to correct a patient’s upper arch. Integrating physical therapy to encourage correct head position and neck posture throughout the day has also proved to be valuable. By the end of Dr. Kinsey’s presentation, the dental professionals in attendance had gained a widened understanding of dental practice applications and a greater appreciation for craniomandibular orthopedics.
