What BOTOX®  Cosmetic Can Treat

BOTOX ® Cosmetic uses a particular technique to eliminate wrinkles, so it doesn’t work on all types of wrinkles. However, it does work on an exciting variety of facial wrinkles, including:

  • Horizontal wrinkles in the forehead
  • Vertical lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines)
  • Crow’s feet
  • Bunny lines beside the nose
  • Lipstick lines around the mouth

In each case, we will evaluate your specific winkles and determine whether they will respond to BOTOX®  Cosmetic.

How Does It Work?

BOTOX ® Cosmetic works by relaxing facial muscles. Our facial muscles, like other muscles, are adapted to learn to anticipate when they are going to be called upon to act. This muscle memory helps you learn to do things like drive a car or shoot a basketball without having to think about each specific muscle motion. It also causes facial muscles to habitually perform the actions that are part of your facial expressions. The muscles think they are helping because they know you’re going to want that particular contraction soon, so why not get it now?

BOTOX®  injections calm down these overeager facial muscles. When the muscle relaxes, the skin can smooth, dramatically reducing the appearance of these wrinkles.

The effect is only partial–you can consciously still make the muscle motions, though they may be diminished–and it is only temporary–the body works around the effects of BOTOX®  and ultimately eliminates it.

Is It Safe?

Many people worry because BOTOX®  Cosmetic is based on a natural toxin that can cause serious illness but it is very safe.

The particular form of the toxin used has been isolated in part because it is easy to control, and injecting the precise amount means that it will only affect the exact muscles we want to target, limiting side effects.

In fact, a recent study showed that only 0.03% of people experienced any adverse event from BOTOX®  Cosmetic injections. These events are generally not serious: the most common was swelling and redness at the injection site.

More than five million people around the world get BOTOX®  Cosmetic injections each year. Each year, there are few, if any, serious complications and remains one of the safest cosmetic procedures available.

BOTOX® and TMJ

Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJ) come in many forms, but the most common involves tense and overactive jaw muscles, which can be sore and cause damage to the jaws and teeth. BOTOX®  injections can relax these jaw muscles, too, which can provide relief from TMJ symptoms, including headaches and migraines. The procedure only provides a few months of relief, but it can be highly effective.
